Mountford...

Mountford Vineyard, Pemberton, Great Southern

Andrew Mountford, an Englishman from Devon, was all smiles when I introduced myself to him in his wonderful, old, wooden tasting room and restaurant at the end of January 2006. I had once again followed my nose to his vineyard after looking through Hallidays “ Australian wine Companion 2006” and deciding this was the one vineyard I should visit in this sparsely vine tailored landscape. After a 10 mile drive through country roads surrounded by forests of Karri, Gum and beautiful, open farmland and scrub I arrived at a dirt track leading down to the Mountford vineyard. Wow this part of the world is so, so beautiful. I can’t wait to return.

Andrew is a trained horticulturist and at the same time a “ wine lover” and when he commenced with this venture he was looking for a region in Australia as yet undiscovered. The situation of the vineyard, which really is completely isolated, proves that Andrew was looking for a very specific place.

Now one of the regions oldest vineyards, true fruit intensity and complexity is clearly starting to show through. This is due to careful vineyard practice such as minimal spraying and since inception, continual sound environmental care. The Fruits integrity is maintained, enabling expression from vineyard to bottle ensuring all our wines retain their essence of place.

2004 Pinot Noir

“ The wine exhibits intense strawberry bouquet. On the palate tannins experience spicy characters that give the wine a layered complexity”
It is a wonderful example of a complex, farmyard Pinot with hints of herbs and spice.

Mr Whirly says

“Complex, forward thinking, organically certified Pinot from cool climate Pemberton. Big wine! Hints of stewed plums and cassis with cinnamon and spice and everything nice.”

New vintage of this certified Organic Pinot Noir will arrive into the UK in late 2008 once Mr Whirly has tasted it.
